O GUARANI THE MASTERWORK OF CARLOS GOMES HAS BEEN "RESTORED" BY AN ITALO-BRASILIAN TEAM

It took two years to recompose the original music to the opera O Guaranì by the Brasilian Carlos Gomes.

The opera which was recently brought to world attention by tenor Placido Domingo had been very successful in 1870, when its was performed at the Scala theater for the first time and in many of the big theaters of the world., but since its debut it got cut and censored. In 1910 it was further modified for Ricordi, who encharged musicologist Luigi Garani to rid the opera of what at the time were considered harmonical errors or just bits out of tune.

The opera thus lost its Brasilian essence, the breaking force of its unusual themes (in the second act there's a scene in which a priest pretends to be helping a dying man to get a secret from him and then kills him, whilst in the third there is a scene of cannibalism); Not even the political parts which dealt with the problem of loyalty to the Portuguese crown, nor the scene of a baccanale which had authentic Guaranì songs in the background, which Gomes have probably obtained from the few survivors of the Indios genocide.

Finally, after two years' work, a team driven by musicologist and conductor Silvio Barbato, a Brasilian of Italian origin, financed by the Italo-American Opera Center of Chicago, has brought the music back to its entirety.

For this, over 300 kg of documents were examined from the historical archives of the Scala theater, Ricordi and the libraries of Rio and San Paolo.

O Guarani was admired in the past by opera giants like Caruso and Beniamino Gigli, recently by Placido Domingo and without doubt it will find once again the popularity which it deserves now that we can hear it as Gomes thought best.

THE CORO DA CAMERA ITALIANO PERFORMS BACH

On Friday and Saturday, 7 and 8 June 1996, at 9 p.m. at the church of St. Paul's-within-the Walls, Via Nazionale, Rome, will be held a concert of choral music of Johann Sebastian Bach: cantatas BWV 131 "Ausder Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir" and BWV 150 "Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich" and the Mass in G Major BWV 236.

The choir, of 27 mixed voices, will be the Coro da Camera Italiano; it will be companied by the orchestra Accademia per Musica and conducted by Paolo Capirci. The soloists will be Antonella Tatulli, soprano, Rosanna Rossoni, mezzosoprano, Paolo Fanciullacci, tenor, and Furio Zanasi, bass. Admission will be Lit. 12,000, at the door only.

The program presents a rare (possibly even the first) performance in Rome of three of J.S. Bach's most beautiful choral works. The first half of the concert will consist of the two cantatas (BWV 131 and 150), written in the composer's youth, whose interest lies in the fact that they represent a transition between the archaic models of Renaissance and 16th-century polyphony and the mature cantata of the eighteenth century, but also in the extreme emotionalism with which the texts of the psalms (130 "De profundis" a 25, respectively) are setto music. The second part of the concert will be the Mass in G Major, BWV 236. Constructed using the baroque procedure of the parody, it joins excerpts drawn from the composer's mature cantatas which Bach himself chose from among his best work, adapting them to the Latin text of the Mass.

The Coro da Camera Italiano has for some years organized and produced concerts of symphonic and choral masterpieces especially of the Baroque period, inexplicably neglected by the Rome's best-known concert seasons. This concert is part of an informal series, launched in 1994, of the complete cantatas of Bach's youth together with other masterpieces of both Bach and the masters of German Baroque. To this end, the choir (which is completely autonomous and does not have a permanent artistic director) calls on soloists, instrumentalists (who use original instruments and techniques) and conductors recognized internationally among the best exponents of the Italian revival of so-called Early Music.
