ASSO’s objectives are the discovery of traces of ancient cultures, the scientific study and the evaluation of the cultural items found, the diffusion of the archaeological culture through direct researches, surveys, contacts with national and foreign cultural Centers, conferences, exhibitions, external cooperations, videos, seminars, multimedia projects and publications. It promotes and accepts underwater and hypogeum searches and recovery activity working with the local Authorities.

The founder members constitute the Directive Council. The Council determines the strategy of activities to be developped, as well as coordinates all operations. The Association operates to advise, manage and support Institutions in underwater archaeology, cave diving (underwater speleology) and natural-artificial cave speleology operations. Occasionally also private Firms apply to the A.S.S.O., for technical advice and for research and works the sectors of its specialization to be carried out. The possible income deriving from such activity is reinvested in the Association in coherence with the voluntary organizations laws.

A.S.S.O. is associated with the Speleological Italian Society, it works as consultant of several Municipalities and Universities, it is accredited to the Italian Underwater Archaeologists Association and to the Department of Underwater Archaeology of the Universities of the Tuscia (Maintenance Cultural Properties) and of Foggia. It is enrolled to the Regional Register of Lazio for the Organizations of Volunteering, Section Culture, with PGR Decree number 485 of March 28 1994.

A.S.S.O. is a self-sufficient organization operating as an "open association" providing personnel to other speleological and underwater organizations or hiring from them when needed. In this way A.S.S.O. keeps a tight check on the works, it spreads know-how and image keeping internal structure to a minimum.

A.S.S.O. has a specific department concerned with development of the internal information technology supports, the advancement Association image and offering advices in multimedia applications. This department has moreover created, since 1995, a famous internet web site of underwater archaeology and speleology (named ASSONET) in which they are present, not only with the news on A.S.S.O., but also with reports on the most important Italian underwater archaeological and speleological realities.
